<![CDATA[Alternative Firing Workshop 2015]]>Sat, 05 Sep 2015 17:31:58 GMThttp://sanantoniopottersguild.com/sgriffito-newsletter/alternative-firing-workshop-2015Picture
If you've ever wanted to learn more about alternative firing techniques, or just want a fun weekend of playing with fire and clay, then this is the workshop for you!

Robert Escamilla and John Nelson will lead a two-day workshop on alternative firing techniques, including raku, horse hair, and more.

Friday November 6 6pm-9pm
Saturday November 7 8am-4pm

The schedule:
Friday: Discuss glazing (recipes included) and prepare sager/bisque pieces for Saturday morning firing. Potluck dinner. Alternative fire vessels will be available at a nominal cost (some burnished for sagar and horse hair).

Saturday: Fire sager; fire raku; fire horse hair; three kilns will be going full blast during the day. Demos on sand blasting and throwing. Plean on a potluck lunch while kilns are firing.

Note: Vessels should be no larger than 6” wide and 10” tall. A clay with grog or sand, such as one formulated for
Raku, is the best to fire. However B-mix with sand or Balcones will normally work. Remember that the shock a vessel goes through when doing this type of firing enhances the chances that the piece will crack.

Earthenware, Ornament and Assemblage:

Mixed Media inspirations by Lyn Belisle

Lyn Belisle has been a working artist and teacher for five decades. She studied production pottery with Tracy Dotson and hand building with Jerry Alexander at the San Antonio Art Institute, and collaborated in kiln-building and studio work with Roger Travis. Her current work includes small hand-built earthenware components which she incorporates into assemblage and other mixed media explorations. These pieces are shown at La Vida Gallery in San Antonio and Dan Pfeiffer Gallery in Fredericksburg.

After a long career teaching art in public school and computer science at Trinity University, Lyn founded her own studio in January of 2013. Lyn Belisle Studio (A Place of Creative Belonging) is both a teaching lab and a work space for artistic experiment and production. She has an active shop on Etsy for her small clay “Earth Shards,” which are sold worldwide.

In this program, Lyn will describe how she uses low-fire unglazed earthenware in her artwork and show examples of her assemblages and collages in series and in single pieces. Participants will have a chance to try various finished on small, unglazed objects including walnut ink, acrylic finishes, and metallic waxes.
